Report: Wireless Handset Market Continues to Improve

By Marisa Torrieri, TMCnet Editor

ABI Research (News - Alert) gave a positive outlook for mobile handset markets in its latest “Mobile Devices Vendor Share” report, which highlighted the third quarter of 2009, comparing it with quarters past.

According to ABI, Q3 2009 showed a year-on-year 6.5 percent contraction in handset shipments to 291.1 million. However, 2009 should close out with only a 4 to 5 percent contraction (to 1,138 million for the year).

Apple reported perhaps the best news: ABI reported that the market share for iPhone smartphones increased from 1.9 to 2.5 percent.

But for more established handset manufacturers, news wasn’t quite as great: Nokia saw its market share slip from 38.3 percent to 37.3 percent in 3Q-2009. Samsung (News - Alert) continues to steam ahead, raising its share to 20.7 percent. Despite some very novel handset model introductions in the second quarter of 2009, ABI reported that LG’s market share softened in Q3 2009 to 10.9 percent. All the other vendors either held their ground or lost a small amount of market share.

Symbian (News - Alert) still leads the smartphone OS market with 48 percent of the market share, followed by BlackBerry at 18 percent. ABI researchers said it’s yet to be seen whether the ‘dark horse’ – aka Google (News - Alert) Android -- captures its predicted 10 percent of the smartphone market by 2014.

“It does it all,” said Chuck Hamby, a Verizon (News - Alert) spokesman for the Tampa Bay region said in a press release. “While we can't disclose sales, we are very, very happy with sales so far.”
