Wireless Management Report: MPEG IC Shipments to Reach 2 Billion Units by 2013
A recent report from In-Stat reveals that shipments of MPEG ICs, which support compression and decompression of digital video, are expected to reach 2 billion units by 2013.
As consumers gain access to digital video on more devices, applications for MPEG digital video compression technology are expanding, particularly in portable devices, In-Stat (News - Alert) said.
In-Stat’s research, “Worldwide MPEG IC Market,” covers the worldwide market for MPEG integrated circuits.
The research examines the MPEG IC markets for broadcast and professional applications, semi-professional and industrial applications and consumer electronics -- both line-powered and mobile.
The report also gives worldwide forecasts for multiple MPEG IC type for several application types.
In-Stat found that the H.264 compression has superseded MPEG-2 in many line-powered applications. Another major technology enhancement is the Scalable Video Codec extension to the H.264.
With the standardization of 3D Blu-ray, multiview video coding or “MVC” gains in importance, the agency said.
MVC is an amendment to H.264/MPEG-4 AVC video compression standard developed with joint efforts by MPEG/VCEG that enables efficient encoding of sequences captured simultaneously from multiple cameras using a single video stream.
“Compression technology continues to improve, offering lower bit rates and higher quality, as well as lower cost and power,” said Michelle Abraham, In-Stat analyst. “H.264 compression is finding a home in most new MPEG ICs targeting both line-powered and mobile devices.”
Among the MPEG IC vendors, Qualcomm (News - Alert) is found to lead the mobile MPEG codec IC market for mobile handsets, while Zoran leads among “Other Mobile Applications,” followed by Samsung (News - Alert), In-Stat said.
There is a substantial difference in the MPEG IC market share among various types of line-powered consumer electronics, such as set top boxes, TVs, and DVD equipment. The leaders in these segments include Broadcom, MediaTek, NXP, Sigma Designs (News - Alert) and STMicroelectronics, according to In-Stat.
The MPEG industry is keen to accelerate the adoption of emerging MPEG standards.
Recently The MPEG Industry Forum, a global advocacy group for standards-based digital television technologies, formed the 3DTV Working Group. Simultaneously they launched the “3D over MPEG” campaign, TMCnet reported.
The new working group and campaign are aimed at expanding the adoption and deployment of MPEG-related standards including MPEG-4 AVC/H.264 video compression technology, according to officials at The MPEG Industry Forum.
