Wireless Management Report: Teleworkers Face Challenges with Cell Phone Signals
Though telecommuting is emerging as a viable way to improve employee efficiency, a recent survey revealed there are a number of challenges many teleworkers face with staying connected via their cell phone or smartphone while working from home.
Wi-Ex, a provider of consumer cell phone signal boosters, said the Annual zBoost “State of the Cell Signal” Survey reveals that 45 percent of teleworkers have experienced problems with their cell phone service while teleworking.
The survey, commissioned by Wi-Ex and conducted by Harris Interactive (News - Alert), was fielded during December 2009 via Harris’ online omnibus.
During the survey, the companies interviewed a nationwide sample of 2,212 U.S. adults ages 18 years and older of whom 1,869 own a cell phone and 443 are teleworkers.
About 63 percent of teleworkers surveyed think their cell phone is extremely or very important to successful teleworking and 30 percent consider their PDA or smartphone including BlackBerry (News - Alert) and iPhone extremely or very important to successful teleworking, according to the survey.
According to zBoost, 35 percent of teleworkers also experienced reception problems, with 28 percent experiencing poor signals or dead zones and 26 percent experiencing dropped calls.
Despite these, 19 percent of teleworkers said they expect the time they spend teleworking to increase in the next 12 months.
The survey, conducted by zBoost, points to the need for products that keep teleworkers connected by boosting voice and data and increasing data speeds at home, in the office or on the go. An example, said the company, is the zBoost-METRO.
Launched at CTIA (News - Alert) this week the zBoost-METRO is a single room cell phone signal booster that requires no external access for the receiving antenna and no vertical separation, company officials said.
The technology allows consumers to take full advantage of voice, data and Internet services on their mobile phones including 3G high-speed data and video, instant messaging, pictures and more -- at home or in their personal workspace.

When it comes to WEM, speed counts Historically, TEM and WEM have moved at a glacial pace. Some WEM vendors still take months to on-board customers and start providing invoice analysis. They also struggle to provide timely ongoing insight into user behavior.

Fear of saving One surprisingly common reason that companies don't use WEMaaS to cut their phone bills has nothing to do with calling plans or cost calculations. It has to do with basic human psychology.
